Howdy folks! So after a wild weekend I finally recovered yesterday to then immediately injure my leg at futsal, and so now I’m stuck blogging. Today I am looking for some advice and insight. I was thinking that I really should invest in a decent camera. Sure, my GoPro is serving me well and I really enjoy all the features, but the quality of photos it produces is sub par compared to those of actual cameras. Obviously it excels at taking videos so I’m not about to toss it into the back of my cupboard, but I would like something that can work in conjunction with it. This is where you clever people come in! If any of you know much about cameras I would LOVE some assistance in this endeavour as I truly know nothing and I don’t want to get swindled by some sales person.
The criteria I’m looking to fill are:
- Ideal travelling weight – so not too heavy and not too ridiculously bulky.
- Durable – we all know what hazards the world throws at us while adventuring.
- Moderately priced – I don’t mind spending a bit of cash now for continued quality many years down the track.
- I’d be looking to take nature and landscape pictures with it so a camera that excels at that would be perfect
- I do love the night sky so the ability to capture the milky way in it’s glory is a plus
- User Friendly – Well look at me…
Feel free to post any advice you may have below 🙂
Speaking of photos I was lucky enough to take some nice ones yesterday while on a lunch date. Here is my home town 🙂
Peace 🙂
I’ve been looking lately too, I have an older model DSLR but wanted something with a little more portability. I was shocked at the prices, you used to be able to pick one up for a modest sum.
Key for me I think was zoom, I wanted it to have at least 20x. I saw a nice little Nikon B500 bridge camera but what put me off was the fact it wasn’t rechargable batteries. In some cases though if you’re out and about that’s a plus if there is no plug handy.
The Canon Powershot SX 620HS was another one I considered. Some of my best pictures were taken on a Canon Powershot before I got the D40.
I tend to look for ones I like and then watch unboxing videos on YouTube as you get a better idea of the camera size.
Then I read reviews to find out other people’s likes, dislikes and quirks.
I haven’t bought one yet, but the Canon is still a strong possibility 🙂

Here’s another to consider: Before my last trip to New Zealand, after much comparative research, I bought an Olympus Stylus Tough G-4. The zoom is only 5x, but its other features more than make up for it. It’s compact, shockproof, dustproof, and waterproof to 15 m depth. You can control it remotely from your smartphone. And the photos are spectacular. And thanks for following! -Gary

Really lovely pics – it seems to me it’s the skill of the camera holder more than the quality of the camera. Good work!

My husband shoots with the Sony A7mark2. It is great for video and low light, is more compact than a DSLR, and takes amazing pics (https://effit-letsgo.com/gallery/). It is a little more fragile than his previous camera, the Cannon 7D, and still on the pricey side but it takes beautiful photos. I have a Panasonic Lumix G7. It is only a fraction of the cost and has been perfect for me – I like something that you can point and shoot with and still get great pics. Best of luck on your search and I hope your leg heals soon 🙂

Lovely photos! I have an Olympus OM-D E-M5. I love it. Very lightweight. As you get more serious about photography, you’ll find that you want better lenses. I started with an all-around kit lens, but now my favorites are prime (25mm) and pro series zoom (40-150).

Olympus seems to be a very well rated brand from what I’m reading! Do these lenses set you back a bit?

Yes, they do. My newest was almost $2,000. I’m expecting it to be a very general purpose lens; very sharp photos and good in low light.

My grab-and-go, take while hiking in the wild-and-wooly is a point and shoot Fuji XP FinePix XP70. It is shockproof, waterproof to 10m (it has an underwater setting), and threads onto the top of my hiking stick for mono-pod support… It is not a Nikon or Canon, but much more suited to days when lightweight carry and ruggedness are important. Cheers!

Cool post and photos!
What ever you do, don’t buy a Nikon D600 full frame with zoom lens. All up mine weighs 3kgs and much to heavy for travelling.
Left Australia in March 2014 and still on the road with a little longer stop in Italy. Pulling out my “beast” (as I call it) often scares people, so I have another little compaq I use for stealth photos. 😉

Hahaha! Great tip. That sounds nightmarish for me as I try to keep my bag light as possible.

I like to as well but when you’re travelling for a long time, that’s hard to do. I usually carry around 30kgs!

I think you’d be happy with a point and shoot for portability. The only thing I can add to the above advice is to look for at least 20 MP for clearer shots. As an aside, my sisters Samsung phone takes amazing photos, phones have come such a long way!

Thank you Eliza 🙂
Yeah I also think that will suit me just fine. 20 MP, got it! Yeah but Phones and I barely get along lol

Well, that is good to hear. I don’t have a smart phone and I was beginning to wonder if one could travel these days without them. Apps of all kinds for info from transport, bnb, eateries, gps, etc. No one carries the old-fashioned guide book anymore… sooo outdated.

Haha yeah I would much prefer a book if it weren’t so bulky and heavy 😦

Great photos. Each camera has its strengths and weaknesses. As for us, we love our Canon’s and phone cameras (droid and I). Oh and the voice recorder. You want enough quality to be able and look back at them because they are memories when our minds fade.

Absolutely right, I’m all for putting the camera down and enjoying the moment, but just that single photo for the days when my brain is full of cobwebs is enough for me.

It makes it all worth it doesn’t it. When lens and eye and brain all match up its a great day isn’t it. Its all about finding the joy.

Hello, thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m going to Australia the end of next year, so immediately jumped to your blog. I LOVE the way you have all of your posts relating to Australia organized. How did you DO that?
In answer to your question, the iPhone takes surprisingly good photos. I have an iPhone 7, and the newer versions cameras have been improved even more.
It all depends on what you want to do with them–if you are not going to enlarge them, but only post them, then you will likely be happy with the iPhone’s photos. The zoom isn’t great, but it is very easy to take panoramic photos, it does wonderfully in low light and it certainly is portable!
Happy travels,
Shelley
