So I’ve been looking into all the wonderful ways you can get around this vast planet of ours in the cheapest possible sense. There are some fantastic programs you can partake in which usually involves working for accommodation and board. So far some of the things I’ve found are:
- Couch surfing
- Working Holidays
- Global House Sitting
- Volunteering agencies
- WWOOF (Willing Workers On Organic Farms)
This is where everyone else comes in…
Are there any others you know about either by experience or research that you think fit this criteria?
I’d love to hear about any and all below in the comments!
Trusted Housesitters is one I have been looking into. You watch their pets and animals while you stay at their home.

I am 60 and would love to travel the world. My husband detests travel, so I’m looking for inexpensive and safe ways for a woman to travel alone.

I haven’t checked this website out, for a bit, but it has a lot of info about woman travellers. Might be helpful, nananoyz (although, you’ve likely found it before; it’s been out there for a while).

Helpx and Workaway are both sites I have used in the past with success.
There is also the possibility of paid seasonal work depending on your nationality and where you want to go.

I haven’t tried any of your suggestions, but I do cut costs by renting an apartment for a month of so and making it home base. It is far more economical that a hotel stay. I also travel with a group called Friendship Force https://www.thefriendshipforce.orgwhich in most cases is a home stay, again less expensive than the usual forms of travel and a great way to meet local people and learn about the area more in-depth.

We signed up with several house sitting websites and put our stuff in storage and took off! That’s what our blog is about.
Good luck!

I have heard of a website called Flexjobs.com that could help with finding jobs to work remotely from anywhere. Haven’t explored it too much though yet. Have you gone on a working holiday yourself before? I was thinking of trying that in New Zealand.

I haven’t started my working holiday adventures just yet 🙂 Canada next year will be the first

It is always good to find things like this, because I would never think to do something like house sit… Thanks for the info… I don’t really have any tips though I always stay in guest houses or hotels and I either check them out on the ground in person (for guest houses) or find the best deals online through whatever site is offering a deal

No worries 🙂 thanks for reading.
I do exactly the same (so far) when I travel

Awesome post! There are also numerous websites that offer small jobs that give you tasks. The website https://www.airtasker.com/ is great for the odd job. Varies by location and type of job, but a good place to start off =)

I could not find any work/volunteer program at my wanted destination when searching online. So I just went there anyway and started to connect with people. Making friends, helping out, and suddenly I had more options than what I could handle! So thats a tip- Be brave and just go!

My wife and I are in our third winter of house sitting. Last year was Australia and New Zealand for 5 months. This year, we’re starting in British Columbia, Canada, and making our way to Thailand for a bit.
If you don’t mind my sharing this recent post, it will give a bit of a run-down about how it works for us. It’s so much more than simply a way to save money, but it does that, for sure!

That sounds awesome.
I’ve recently got onto trusted housesitters… I was going to sign up then realised I don’t need it just yet, but I will eventually join your ranks
